Strauss and Wagner Master class with Gregory Lamar

Intensive, four-day course and masterclass for the study and application of vocal technique and the operas of Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner.  A select group of eight singers will be chosen to study arias and scenes from the various operas.  The following vocal categories/numbers of singers are recommended:  Soprano (2), Mezzo-soprano/Alto (2), Tenor (2) Baritone/Bass (2)

Please note that only day 1,3 and 4 are open to observers. 

Gregory Lamar is internationally renowned as a voice teacher, vocal coach and consultant.  His students perform regularly in opera houses, festivals and concert halls throughout the world.  During the 2017-2018 season, his students are performing in many productions, including Der Rosenkavalier (Bayerische Staatsoper München, Glyndebourne Festival), Parsifal (Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Opernhaus Zürich), Tosca (Royal Opera, Covent Garden), Ariadne auf Naxos (Wiener Staatsoper), Elektra (San Francisco Opera), Fidelio (Staatsoper Hamburg), Pique Dame (Staatsoper Stuttgart), Eugene Onegin (Komische Oper), Rigoletto (Royal Danish Opera, Copenhagen), Die Zauberflöte (Volksoper Wien), Die Walküre (Beijing Music Festival, Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse), Salome (Opera North) and Eugene Onegin (Hawaii Opera Theatre).  

Mr. Lamar is a regular guest master teacher/vocal coach for the young artist studio program of the Komische Oper in Berlin.  He has also been a guest vocal coach at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen and the Danish Actors Association.  He has conducted master classes for other young artist programs, including that of the Staatsoper Nürnberg.  Mr. Lamar is now guest vocal coach and vocal consultant at the Malmö Oper and the Malmö Academy of Music/Lund University.  This past summer, he was invited to conduct master classes at the Copenhagen Opera Festival, where he is also casting advisor.  Mr. Lamar has collaborated with noted voice specialists in working with injured voices and has conducted workshops in voice and speech for actors in New York and Germany.  He was a consultant to Thea Dispeker Artists’ Management and collaborates regularly with other artists’ management agencies in the U.S. and Europe.  He has been an adjudicator for various competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera Regional Auditions.  Mr. Lamar has been a member of the faculties of Montclair State University and New School University (the Actors’ Studio Drama School, MFA Program).  He maintains private voice studios in New York City, Berlin and Copenhagen.

Mr. Lamar’s students perform in musical theater on Broadway, on both national and international tours, and in film and television.  Other students are teaching at various conservatories and universities throughout the U.S. and Europe.  

As a performer, Mr. Lamar was noted for his wide-ranging baritone, artistry and versatility in opera, oratorio and recital. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Georgia, Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and did postgraduate work at the Indiana University School of Music.

II.  Course Outline


Day 1* – Master Class 

                        Part One – 11:00 to 13:00 (four singers, twenty-five minutes each)


                       Part Two – 14:30 to 16:30 (four singers, twenty-five minutes each)


Day 2 – Private Lessons (Vocal Technique) - only singers, not open to observers

                       Part One – 11:00 to 13:00 (four singers, twenty-five minutes each)


                       Part Two – 14:15 to 16:15 (four singers, twenty-five minutes each)


Day 3* – Master Class (same schedule as Day 1)


Day 4* –Master Class/Coffee and Tea-Listening Hour

                       Part One:  11:00 to 13:30 

                         (Each singer will perform his/her aria and receive a brief critique)


                       Part Two:  14:45 – 16:00

                       (Recordings of various singers, performing Wagner, will be played and discussed)
